How old is rugby? Why rugby league dates from 1895

Rugby league is 131 years old in October 2026. Understand the 1895 split, rugby’s traditional 1823 origin and the move to thirteen-a-side in 1906.
Rugby league is 131 years old as of 11 October 2026, counting from its foundation on 29 August 1895. That was when northern English clubs broke away from rugby union to establish their own competition. The Rugby Football League’s historical timeline identifies this as the sport’s birth.
If you mean rugby football more broadly, the traditional starting year is 1823—203 years before 2026. But that answer refers to the William Webb Ellis story at Rugby School, not the founding of rugby league. The town’s history of the game presents the story as tradition, rather than a proven moment of invention.
Which starting date are you counting?
Rugby’s origins, written laws and separation into distinct codes are different milestones. They do not produce the same age.
| Milestone | Starting date | Years to 2026 | What the number means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional origin of rugby football | 1823 | 203 | The Webb Ellis story at Rugby School, presented as tradition in the town’s history of the game |
| First written rugby football laws | 1845 | 181 | Rugby School pupils’ codification of the game, documented in the same history |
| Foundation of rugby league | 29 August 1895 | 131 | The northern breakaway recorded by the RFL |
| Introduction of thirteen-a-side rugby league | 1906 | 120 | The change in team size and introduction of the play-the-ball recorded by the RFL |
The year-only figures are calendar-year differences, not exact anniversary calculations.
Why rugby league’s birthday is in 1895
The decisive meeting took place at the George Hotel in Huddersfield. A contemporary report in the Huddersfield Daily Chronicle, dated 30 August 1895, recorded the establishment of the Northern Rugby Football Union on the principle of payment for “bona fide broken time only”. The report is reproduced by Huddersfield Local History Society.
Broken-time payments compensated players for working time lost through playing, as explained in Super League (Europe)’s historical account submitted to Parliament. The dispute over paying players—not a decision to introduce thirteen-a-side teams—was the immediate basis of the separation.
That distinction matters: rugby league began in 1895, but became thirteen-a-side in 1906. Its organisational birthday and the arrival of a defining feature of the modern game are eleven years apart.
How old is international rugby league?
International rugby league has its own starting point. The RFL timeline records the first international on 5 April 1904, when Other Nationalities beat England 9–3 at Wigan. Other Nationalities consisted of Welsh and Scottish players; it was not a single national side. That gives international rugby league a history of 122 years as of October 2026. The match also predates the adoption of thirteen-a-side rugby league, so it should not be treated as a fixture played under today’s format.
The men’s Rugby League World Cup began later, in 1954, when Great Britain defeated France in Paris to become the first champions, according to International Rugby League’s tournament history. For the Australia–Britain rivalry, our Ashes Test results by year cover the series record from 1908.
