Western Samoa’s rugby league record: from the Pacific Cup to 1995

Cal Meredith

Western Samoa is the former name in Samoa’s rugby league record. Trace the 1986 debut, Pacific Cup titles and two-match 1995 World Cup campaign.

Western Samoa is the historical name used for the national rugby league side now recorded as Samoa, or Toa Samoa. It is not a separate team whose results should be excluded from Samoa’s history. The country changed its constitutional name from Western Samoa to Samoa in July 1997, while Rugby League Project’s results archive carries both names within the same team record. Here, “Western Samoa rugby” means the thirteen-a-side rugby league team. Rugby union results belong to a different record, even where the country name and some players overlap.

The early record: 1986 debut and Pacific Cup titles

Western Samoa began its recorded rugby league campaign at the 1986 Pacific Cup in Rarotonga, Cook Islands. Its opening match was a 34–12 victory over Tokelau, dated 28 October in Rugby League Project. Rugby League Samoa’s own history identifies that fixture as the side’s first Test. (Rugby League Project, Rugby League Samoa)

The team reached the final on its first appearance, losing 23–6 to New Zealand Māori. Another final defeat against Māori followed when the 1988 Pacific Cup was held in Apia. Western Samoa then won successive titles:

  • 1990: beat New Zealand Māori 26–18 in the final, completing an unbeaten tournament.
  • 1992: retained the trophy with an 18–14 extra-time victory over Tonga.

Rugby League Samoa’s historical account records both title wins and the extra-time finish in 1992. The match archive also lists both final scores and the unbeaten 1990 campaign.

For record comparisons, keep the competition label attached. These Pacific Cups included representative sides such as New Zealand Māori alongside national teams. A total of all tournament appearances is therefore not automatically the same measure as a total restricted to nation-versus-nation Tests.

Western Samoa at the 1995 Rugby League World Cup

The country’s first Rugby League World Cup appearance came in 1995, under the Western Samoa name. It played France and Wales in Group C, with its campaign ending after two matches. (Rugby League Samoa)

That produces a precisely defined tournament record: played two, won one, lost one; 66 points scored and 32 conceded, for a points difference of +34 and a 50% win rate.

The positive points difference did not mean qualification. The Wales match was a winner-takes-all contest for a semi-final place: Western Samoa’s large opening win over France could not compensate for losing the decisive group game. Wales led 14–10 at half-time and held the Samoans scoreless after the interval. (Wales Rugby League’s retrospective)

Graham Lowe coached the side, captained by John Schuster. The team against Wales also included Tea Ropati, Va’aiga Tuigamala, Willie Poching, Apollo Perelini and Joe Vagana—names that help identify the league side when searching older reports. (Wales Rugby League team list)

Following the record into the Samoa era

Use Western Samoa when describing those historical fixtures, but include them under Samoa when tracing the national side across eras. American Samoa is a different opponent: the archive records Western Samoa beating American Samoa 30–10 in the 1994 Pacific Cup. (Rugby League Project)
