Australia 31–0 American Samoa: the record belongs to football

Cal Meredith

Australia beat American Samoa 31–0 in a 2001 football World Cup qualifier. Check the date, scorers and distinction from Australia–Samoa rugby league.

Australia’s 31–0 win over American Samoa was an association football match, not a rugby league Test. The Socceroos won at Coffs Harbour on 11 April 2001, in Oceania qualifying for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Archie Thompson scored 13 goals. The result therefore belongs in football’s record book, not the Kangaroos’ international rugby league results. UPI’s contemporary match report records the date, place, score and Thompson’s tally.

Australia had beaten Tonga 22–0 only two days earlier, establishing a men’s international scoring record that the American Samoa result immediately surpassed. The Socceroos’ official retrospective records both results and lists all 31 goals: Thompson scored 13, David Zdrilic eight, Con Boutsianis three, Aurelio Vidmar, Tony Popovic and Simon Colosimo two each, and Fausto de Amicis one.

The opposition’s circumstances matter when interpreting the margin. Passport and eligibility problems left goalkeeper Nicky Salapu as the only available member of American Samoa’s usual squad. Under-20 replacements were also unavailable because of school exams. Both the official retrospective and the Guardian’s contemporary report describe those restrictions: this was not simply a full-strength side losing heavily.

Early accounts reported uncertainty over whether Australia had scored 32 and Thompson 14, following an apparent scoreboard error. The settled figures in the Socceroos’ official record are 31–0 and 13 goals.

The Australia–Samoa rugby league distinction

There are two separate identities to keep straight: the Socceroos are not the Kangaroos, and American Samoa is not Samoa. American Samoa is a United States territory; the Samoa side in the rugby league comparison below is a different national team.

In the men’s Rugby League World Cup final played at Old Trafford on 19 November 2022, Australia beat Samoa 30–10. Rugby League Project’s match record confirms the date and score, while BBC Sport’s final report records Australia’s six tries and three successful goal kicks. That 30 is a points total—not 30 football goals—and the match was a final, not a qualifier.
