Papua New Guinea Rugby League Results & Tables

Rugby League in Papua New Guinea is not a sport – it is a Religion! Papua New Guinea is the only nation in the world where they can truly say that the sport of Rugby League is the National sport. Their supporters are the most passionate around without a doubt. The sport was introduced during World War II by Australian Soldiers stationed there and the sport grew very quickly in popularity. By the 1906’s the PNGRFL had grown to the point where it was clearly the dominant national sport. The PNGRFL became a member of the RLIF in 1974 and the Kumuls (or Bird of Paradise as the national team is known) started to play regular international’s against the British, French, Aussies and Kiwis. They first competed in the world cup in the 1985-89 series and have been fixtures ever since. The semi-professional national competition is the Digicel Cup and has teams from all over the country. More recently, in 2010, there was been some instability in the administration with some of the members not recognising the board but this seems to have been resolved in 2011. There is a current big from a PNG consortium to have a team in the Australian NRL competition as on of the two new expansion teams.
