Rugby League International Scores World Rankings

Year Ending: 01 Jan 2010 – 31 Dec 2010
Number of teams: 40-45

The RLIS world rankings aim to not only show the losses and successes of individual nations, but also reward the teams that actually get out there and promote and spread the game of Rugby League around the world. I can guarantee it will most probably not agree with and indeed stir controversy with most people out there since they will see things through only the biased, black and white, eyes of a full national game, rather than seeing all the other hard work that goes into running the game. Here I try to paint a more colourful picture with the rankings of the over-all state of the sport world-wide.

So let me explain how it works. First you will notice there are three results columns with losses (L), draws (D) and wins (W). A loss earns 1 point, a draw 2 points and win 3 points. You will notice they are colour coded and this is refernce to the type of game that is played:

  • In Purple – These are other matches played by teams, student matches, clubs tourning overseas, Pioneer teams, for example the Australian School Boys tour or the Jr Kangaroos and Jr Kiwis games. This has a multiplier of x1
  • In Green – These are the A and B teams of any Nation, for example the Home nations would be in here, France A playing Scotland A as well. These Matches have a multiplier of x2
  • In Red – These are the full internationals, matches that involve the top players from each country in tournaments, tours and one off games, e.g Samoa v Tonga, Australia v New Zealand or England v France. This column has a multiplier of x3
  • In Orange – This column gives each nation a further on how strong their domestic set up is: x1 – no domestic games at all; x2 – is some domestic games usually two to three teams; x3 – Is a full domestic competition with teams four or above, in line with the RLIF definition.

An example: Lets look at Engalnd. They have played 23 matches in the year all up over all levels. At the lowest level they have lost 5, drawn 1 and won 7, this gives that first level 1x(1×5 + 2×1 + 3×7)=28; the next level they have lost 1, drawn 0 and won 4, this gives 2x(1×1 + 2×0 + 3×4) =26; the final and highest level they have lost 2, drawn 1 and won 2, 3x(1×2 + 2×1 + 3×2)=30; So they are sitting like that at 28+26+30=84 points; now with the domestic set up multiplier which is x3 you have 84×3=252 points. So hopefully this example explains how its all worked out.
