2013 Starting to Build

By Daniel Andruczyk

More developments in 2013 as the big year in Rugby League kicks off. The USARL 9s is firming up as we anticipate that information from the USARL on this years events will come forward soon. I hear that there are a few details that need to be finalised. In the UK there has been some worry that the Salford City reds will soon close their doors, but seems that there may be a saviour on the horizon.

USARL 9s

This years instalment of the 9s has been announced. This year it really does go global with teams from 6 nations participating. Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Canada, Fiji and the hosts USA will all have teams participating. From Canada the British Columbia representative team will be coming. This will be an exciting tournament and  RLIS will be heading once again to cover it.

The Tournament also returns to its spiritual home in Conshohocken, Philadelphia. The Fight will be hosting the tournament once more in their newly renovated stadium which the council has revamped to be a full international Rugby League Field.

Salford City Reds

Salford are in some debt trouble, with  £300,000 in taxes, plus a combined total of around £70,000 owed to players due. There was a winding up hearing against them and it has been postponed for another few weeks. Step in Dr. Marwan Koukash.

Koukash is a Kuwaiti born millionaire race horse owner and is in discussion to possibly buys and bail out the club. This is important for the super league that it does not loses one of its clubs for this year, however I am not sure if this is the right long term solution.

Having Rich owners is OK, but its important that clubs are able to stand on their own two feet. If the owners leave, clubs need to have their own ability to survive and grow. It will be interesting to see what happens with South Sydney and Russel Crowe.

Edit Function

As has been requested by Deluded Pom and a few others, I have finally found a way to get an edit function into the comments section. This will be on for about 30 minutes after a comment is made, so if there are any typos or amendments to comments, they can be edited by the poster. I hope this works well for everyone, let me know if there are any issues.
