CZRLA Press Release – Czech 2011 State of Origin

From Andrew Mulhall

The announcement of the CZRLA East team for this weekend’s annual State of Origin match to be played on Saturday in Vrchlabi signals the beginning of the Czech Rugby League’s 2011 representative season.

The CZRLA East team is made up of players from those clubs located in the east of the Bohemian sector of the country – Pardubice, Vrchlabi & Chrudim – and comes only days after the Vrchlabi Mad Squirrels hosted the Pardubice Jets in front of a crowd of 400 people. The less experienced Mad Squirrels were defeated in that match 40-8, but captain-coach, David Lahr, a former Jets player himself, was enthusiastic about his team’s performance.

“The Vrchlabi players are mostly very young”, he said, “so it was great for them to play in front of such a large, enthusiastic crowd.

We didn’t win this time, but we will learn from that and come back stronger! Lahr was also keen to praise his young players, and to congratulate those of them who were selected in East representation team, “I think we will have another great crowd for this match, & with so many Vrchlabi players named in this team it will make us very hard to beat in front of a vocal, partisan crowd”.

The CZRLA West team is to be announced tomorrow, with the Championship leading Beroun Black Panthers expected to dominate selection. The Czech representative season this year also includes a Czech v Exhiles match & a Euro Bowl clash with Hungary. The CZRLA East team for 2011 is:

  1. Mike Masia (Pardubice)
