Round Up of the Weekends Results

By Daniel Andruczyk

So its has been a busty weekend with the Donnybrook Cup where Ireland defeated the USA 26-8 in Philadelphia. But of course there has been much domestic activity as well. So a round up of the weekends results. But first up some news for people that were asking about Hawaii.

Rugby League in Hawaii

I emailed Jack Breen who heads Rugby League in Hawaii and got a response with what’s going on there and also the players that were in the Tomahawks team. Below is what I got.

Rugby League is growing in Hawaii on both Oahu and Maui. A team is presently in the formative stages that will compete with teams outside of Hawaii. The players selected for the Tomahawks all qualified during a Combine and Trial Match held on March 5, 2011 on Maui. Kelly McGill of Oahu was the first player qualified at the CATM. Mike Tuala, of Maui also qualified at the CATM. Andrew Malafu is a long time Maui Rugby Org member who is currently playing in the UK with London Scottish FC after spending two developmental seasons with Bracknell RFC. Maui’s Rugby League team also includes Sione Pila Taufa and Vaka Manupuna who played for the Tomahawks at the Atlantic Cup. We also held a CATM on Oahu on March 6, 2011 and qualified several players for the Hawaii All Rugby Professionals (HARP) side we are putting together… Both Kelly and Mike have played Rugby League professionally in Australia before returning home to Hawaii.

We are in the process of setting up matches for this spring and expect to have an announcement regarding our first two major events in the next week.

So looks like there is some good stuff happening over there. I met Jack on the weekend and he is a very enthusiastic about the sport over there and is genuinely excited about it going big. He said he is now convinced Rugby League is the way to go.
