Czech Rugby League Pre-season Domestic Competition:

Pardubice Jets Victory!

The Pardubice Jets won the 1st ever Czech Rugby League 5aside beach rugby league competition with a thrilling 7-4 victory in extra time against the reigning Czech 5aside touch champions the Beroun Panthers. After being locked at 1 try each at the end of the obligatory 2x10 minute halves, both teams scored a further try in the 2x5 minute extra-time halves meaning that at the end of 30 minutes of frantic 5aside rugby league, marvelously refereed by Richard York, both teams had 3 tries apiece on the board. At that point a further 5 minute period was played with both teams now reduced to 4 players apiece. During this period both teams raced in 2 tries each as fatigue levels in the humid, summer conditions had even the 100 spectators feeling exhausted. In the final period of 5 minutes in which both teams played with only 3 players each the Jets thrilled their home crowd by running in 3 tries against the exhausted Beroun team who were led by Czech national team captain Michal Priputen. For Pardubice, the try scorers in the final were Victor Leeuw, Jiri Eichler, Mike Masia, Ondrej Kopecky, Michael Ross, Roman Nedomlel & Ollie Donoghue.

6 teams, representing 5 Czech Rugby League clubs, participated in the 1 day tournament hosted by Pardubice & organized by Jets management Jiri Paula & Carlos Andres Barona Arevalo. The surprise packet of the day was the magnificent performances of the Vrchlabi team, coached by Czech international David Lahr, who were competing in their very 1st Rugby League competition. Their tenacious, disciplined performances saw them finish in 3rd place ahead of much more experienced competition made up of the reigning Czech Rugby League Champions Praslavice, the Prague-based Canza team, & the victorious Jets support team, the Barbarians.

If the quality of play displayed at the Pardubice Beach Rugby tourney is any indication then the Czech Rugby League are set for a terrific 2nd domestic season which will include all of last season’s inaugural teams competing for the domestic Championship as well as new guys Vrchlabi, international matches against traditional rivals Serbia & Germany, & a range of Rugby League development programs in & around the Pardubice-Moravia region.
