Team Alpenstoff Win the Second Scandinavian 9s

The 2nd Scandinavian 9s took place in Gothenburg on Saturday. On a cold day, 3 Swedish team (Spartacus Gothenburg RK , Vanersborg RK , Boras RK), 2 Norwegian teams (Oslo RK , Lillestrom Lions) and 1 team from Germany (Team Alpenstoff) put on a great show and the event followed on from last years success in Oslo.

The first game up saw Team Alpenstoff just have enough power to overcome a spirited Vanersborg team to take a 20-16 win to go top of Group A. Team Alpenstoff narrowly beat Oslo RK 16-14 to book a place in the final. Kiel Jaeger, Justin Carter, Christian Gabriel and Thomas Isaak playing big roles in the narrow win. The final game In the final game from Group A Vanersborg RK narrowly beating the Oslo team 10-8. 

Who would join Team Alpenstoff in the final? The first game in Group B saw Home club Spartacus, having a couple of players with League experience, beat fellow Swedes Boras RK 28-12. And put down a marker as the team to beat. A thrilling draw in the next game from Group B, featuring Lillestrom Lions and Boras RK, had the crowd on their feet.The final game saw Spartacus blew Lillestrom Lions away with another top performance winning 24-4 to book a place in the final.

The final witnessed the game of the day. Team Alpenstoff scored first, but then a brace of tries gave the Swedish team the lead. With both teams strong in defence, chances were few. With seconds to go and Spartacus looking like they would take home the Cup, Kiel Jaeger produced a piece of magic to slip a pass to Justin Carter to go over on the hooter. The final score was team Alpenstoff 12 Spartacus Gothenburg RK 8.

Isaac Schmidt (Lillestrom Lions) was voted player of the 9s Event. For Team Alpenstoff, 19 year old Thomas Isaak was voted player of the event. At 1,99metres and weighing 115 Kgs, he set a good platform for Team Alpenstoff to get the ball out to the backs.
