Press Release – STUART WILKINSON`S FIRST VISIT TO RUSSIA TO HELP WITH WC PREPARATIONS

PHIL CAPLAN, RLEF MEDIA OFFICER

Experienced coach Stuart Wilkinson has completed his first visit to Russia to assess and aid their prospects for the 2013 World Cup.

During  his five day trip, he spent time with all the RARL clubs observing the domestic state of the sport and offering ideas for improvement in the build up to their World Cup qualifiers in October.

“I saw some fantastic potential and some big gaps,” noted Wilkinson. “But one thing was consistent – rugby intelligence.” He delivered two sessions a day to different clubs in Moscow and the Moscow Region. “It was very intense but all responded very well and proved to be extremely enthusiastic to learn more about the game,” he continued.

He also watched a Moscow v Moscow Region match and gave feedback on individual and team performances, as well as identifying nine players for the National squad.

He is returning to Russia in a few weeks time. “I am starting to formulate plans for between now and October, make regular visits and contact with elite players. I will work closely with Edgard Taturyan and I can`t wait to go back to Russia where I`ve made some great friends.”

Taturyan, chief of Russian RL, was delighted by the whole process and encouraged about his nation’s prospects in the qualifying matches against Italy, Lebanon and Serbia. “It`s been fantastic to have Stuart here and we  hope that his regular visits will give our players and coaches a better understanding of the game which they can put in practice,” he said.

  1. International League says:

That is good to see Russia getting some attention. It did surprise me that they are in the qualifiers for the RLWC13. I would think they will be the easy beats of the qualifiers, but I would like to see them go well. They are a big nation and could bring alot to RL.

  2. Chris Sanders says:

No one was interested in Russia once Kamaldinov went.Like the American game, there’s no money there now, but Stu Wikinson is a genuine Rugby League person, unlike say Bob Bailey, who’s actually interested in trying to help further Russia’s cause.
I wish wish Wilkinson luck in his future endeavours in Russia and I will give him plenty of moral support.
I think he will do well and where’s Vinny Webb now?He did wonders with Georgia considering he had to convert a lot of Rugby Union people into competent RL players!
