Wales and Australia in the Battle of Blackwood

By Daniel Andruczyk

The weekends proceedings opened up with a very tough Junior international between the Welsh U18’s and the Australian Institute of Sport. The Czech Republic had their last round before the winter break in Beroun and the Cup final in South Africa was played with an upset in the final.

But first the Rugby League World Magazine’s world 13 was announced this week with the Aussies dominating things again. The team is:

  • Billy Slater
  • Brett Morris
  • Greg Inglis
  • Michael Jennings
  • Taniela Tuiaki
  • Darren Lockyer
  • Johnathan Thurston
  • Fuifui Moimoi
  • Cameron Smith
  • James Graham
  • Gareth Ellis
  • Anthony Watmough
  • Sam Burgess

Europe

Wales showed that they have some good depth in the juniors coming through the ranks by putting up a good fight against the Australians. As seems to be the way with the European teams, the firs 60 mins always seem very competitive before the Australians are able to run away with it. The half time score was 12-12 but in the end the Australian powerful pack was too much and they took the match by twenty points 38-18.

At the time of writing only one result had come in from the French LER Elite 1 competition. Carcassonne had an upset victory over Pia at home 46-18

The Czech Republics off-season friendlies continued with the Beroun Black Panthers played the Pardubice Jets on the 28th of November and the match went down to the wire. Beroun in a last minute try took the match 28-24.

The next round in the Maltese domestic season is on the 20th of December between the North and South.

South Africa

The Super 8’s Rhino Cup cam to a head this weekend with the final played between the Tuks Bulls and Brakpan Bears. In what was an upset the Bears lost their first match of the year and the Tuks Bulls won 60-26.

Australia

Some big news to come out of Australia this week. So last week it was announced that the new ARL commission will be up and running soon and one of the goals is to have new teams in the competition by 2013. Well looks like the other NRL clubs are not that happy about this and are not keen to see any more expansion just yet. Will be interesting to see the Central Coasts reaction to this.

Yesterday news started to trickle through that St Georges favourite son, Mark Gasnier, wants to make a return to the NRL. This would probably be mid year when his French Rugby Union contract is up. So be interesting to see what happens there.
